Wi-Fi QR Code: Let Guests Connect With One Scan

A Wi-Fi QR code stores your network name, security type and password so phones can join without anyone typing. Both iPhone and Android cameras recognise the format natively. The code is generated on your device, so the password is never uploaded anywhere.

What is inside a Wi-Fi QR code

The content follows a widely supported text format: WIFI:T:WPA;S:CafeGuest;P:secret123;; where T is the security type (WPA, SAE for WPA3-only networks, WEP or nopass), S is the network name (SSID) and P is the password. An optional H:true marks a hidden network. Special characters such as ; , : and backslash are escaped with a backslash, which the generator handles automatically.

Security tips before you print

  • Anyone who scans the code, or photographs it, learns the password. Use a separate guest network rather than your main one.
  • Keep the code inside your premises, for example on a table card or behind the counter, not in a shop window.
  • If you change the password, the old code stops working and must be replaced.
  • WPA2 and WPA3 passwords must be 8 to 63 characters; the form checks this for you.

Where a Wi-Fi code helps

Cafes, rental apartments, offices with visitor networks, clinics and events all benefit. A small frame with text like Free Wi-Fi: scan to join tells people what the code does before they scan, which also builds trust. Print it at least 2 to 3 cm wide on matte paper so reflections do not block the camera.

How to make it

  1. Open Create and choose Wi-Fi.
  2. Enter the network name exactly as it appears, including capital letters.
  3. Select the security type and type the password; tick Hidden network if the SSID is not broadcast.
  4. Add a frame with a short instruction, then save or print the code.
  5. Test it with a phone that has never joined the network.

Frequently asked questions

Do Wi-Fi QR codes expire?

No. The code holds the network details directly, so it keeps working until you rename the network or change the password.

Is my Wi-Fi password sent to a server?

Not by this app. The code is built entirely in your browser or the Android app, and the password is not uploaded or shared with other apps.

Why does my phone not connect after scanning?

Usually the network name or password has a typo, or the security type does not match the router. Check capitalisation and whether the router uses WPA2, WPA3 or mixed mode.

Can I scan a Wi-Fi QR code to see the password?

Yes. The scanner shows the decoded network name and password, which is handy when you need to type it on a laptop that has no camera.
