Location QR Code: Open Exact Coordinates in a Map
A location QR code stores latitude and longitude so a scan opens the spot in a maps app, ready for directions. It is precise to the entrance or parking area, which a street address often is not. You can create it offline from coordinates alone.
Two ways to encode a location
The geo: URI (RFC 5870) is a standard format such as geo:37.5665,126.9780?q=37.5665,126.9780(Main%20Gate). Android opens it in the default maps app. Support on iPhone cameras is less consistent, so the generator also offers a Google Maps link, https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=lat,lng, which any phone can open in a browser or the Maps app.
Getting accurate coordinates
- In most map apps, long-press the exact spot and copy the coordinates shown.
- Use decimal degrees with at least five decimal places; that is about one metre of precision.
- Latitude comes first and must be between -90 and 90; longitude is between -180 and 180.
- Check that you have not swapped the two values, a common mistake that lands the pin in the ocean.
Where location codes help
Event invitations, delivery instructions, trailheads, campsites, construction sites without a clear address, and back entrances for staff or suppliers. Add a short label such as Loading dock B so people know what they are looking for when the map opens.
If you want visitors to save a date as well, combine this with an event QR code that includes the venue.
How to make it
- Open Create and choose Location.
- Paste the latitude and longitude in decimal degrees.
- Add an optional label and pick geo: URI or Google Maps link.
- Scan the result with both an Android phone and an iPhone if possible, then download.
Frequently asked questions
Does a location QR code need internet?
The coordinates are stored in the code, but showing a map and directions usually needs data unless the phone has offline maps downloaded.
Which format should I use for iPhone users?
The Google Maps link is the safest choice for mixed audiences because every phone can open a web link. The geo: format is most reliable on Android.
Can I encode a street address instead of coordinates?
Coordinates are more exact. If you prefer an address, create a Website code with a map search link that contains the address.
