GS1 QR Code Generator
A GS1 QR code carries GS1 product data, either in classic element-string form or as a GS1 Digital Link web address. The Digital Link version lets one code serve both retail scanners and shoppers' phones.
Two ways to put GS1 data in a QR code
- GS1 QR Code with FNC1: the data is encoded as AI element strings, like GS1-128, and is meant for industrial and retail scanners.
- GS1 Digital Link: the GTIN and other AIs are written as a URL path, for example https://example.com/01/09506000134352/10/ABC123. A phone opens the web page, while a GS1-aware scanner extracts the GTIN and batch.
Why brands are moving to 2D on pack
GS1 is leading a transition from linear barcodes to 2D codes at the point of sale, so that one symbol can carry product identification, batch, expiry and a link to product information. A Digital Link QR can drive recalls, freshness checks and consumer information without adding a second code.
The GTIN inside must come from a licence with a GS1 Member Organisation such as GS1 US or GS1 Korea. The app validates the structure and check digit, but it does not issue numbers or host Digital Link resolvers. You can use your own domain or a GS1 resolver.
Printing guidance
Keep a quiet zone of four modules around the code, print dark modules on a light background, and choose error correction level M or Q for packaging. A Digital Link URL with GTIN and batch usually fits in a version 3 to 5 QR. On retail packaging, a module size of about 0.4 to 0.6 mm is a reasonable starting point; grade production with ISO/IEC 15415. Short domains keep the symbol small.
How to make it
- Choose GS1 QR Code in the barcode generator.
- Select element-string or Digital Link output and enter your domain if using Digital Link.
- Add the GTIN and optional AIs such as (10) batch or (17) expiry.
- Check validation, then export SVG, PDF or PNG.
- Scan with both the app scanner and a phone camera.
Frequently asked questions
Can a GS1 Digital Link QR replace my EAN-13?
Retailers are adopting 2D scanning gradually. Until your trading partners confirm support, print the EAN-13 alongside the QR.
Do I need to use id.gs1.org as the domain?
No. GS1 Digital Link works with your own domain as long as the path follows the Digital Link syntax.
What happens when a shopper scans it?
The phone opens the URL, so make sure that web address leads to a useful page.
